CITY THAT NEEDS MASJID
Being one of the most charming cities
of New Zealand, Napier, is located in Hawke's Bay on the Eastern coast
of the North Island. The city is about 320 kilometres northeast of
Wellington. Napier is also known as the Art Deco City because it has
the most comprehensive collection of art deco buildings in the world.
The city’s population is about 60,000. More than thirty Muslim
households live here. Sadly, this city does not have a masjid, not
even a small Islamic centre. The only masjid in Hawke’s Bay is in
Hastings that is about 18 kilometres south of Napier. The remoteness
of the only masjid in the region does not only bar Napier Muslims from
close involvement with Islamic activities, but also inhibits an active
promotion and spread of Islam among Napier residents.
